October 7 2009: Money (That's What CKDU Wants)

My message: I love campus-community radio. I have been volunteering and working at campus-community radio stations since my days at UBC (since 1997!). I have been hooked since my introduction to community airwaves.

Campus-community radio is different. It is diverse programming, it is a public resource, it is somewhere where everyone can contribute. There are no over-the-top announcers, corporate ads, or top 40 hits. To quote an old Station Manager of mine, Matthew Crosier, community radio is "foreground entertainment, the kind of stuff you actually sit down and listen to rather than playing as mere background noise". Foreground entertainment, I always liked that.

I am currently the Program Director at CKDU 88.1FM in Halifax. It has taken my appreciation and understanding of how community radio operates to a new level. I am learning every day and continually amazed at the unique people and programming that are part of this station.

The facts: CKDU 88.1 FM is Halifax's only campus-based community radio station, broadcasting original programming 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Beyond a small group of 5 part-time staff, the station is entirely run by over 200 volunteers. A significant portion of CKDU's operating budget is raised through our annual funding drive – a 10-day on-air extravaganza where we ask our listeners to pledge their support for community radio.

Our goal this year is to raise $25,000, and with your help, we can do it! I have been producing a show for the station called "The Message" since the end of May. Check out the links on this page if you haven't listened to it yet!

So, to bring this to a close, I am asking (on behalf of CKDU) for your donations. Your support will help keep CKDU alive and keep the airwaves unique, independent, and alternative.

You can donate to the CKDU 88.1FM funding drive any time during the drive (Oct. 1 - 10) by calling (902) 49-HAPPY or you can donate online right now at http://fundingdrive.ckdu.ca/. If donating online, make sure to include the name of my show (The Message) or my name when you submit your donation.

Or, if you prefer, you can just send me an e-mail with your pledge (name, address, amount). And a pledge package, which includes a pre-paid mailer to send in your donation, will be sent to you.

Thank you everyone! It means a lot.
